For a growing number of Australians, these are lonely times. More of us are living alone, and fewer of us are having children. But more and more of our closest mates now have fur and four legs, and we just love them to pieces ... to the tune of some $2.3 billion a year. Believe it or not, that's more than we as a nation spend on foreign aid.
