  • For a while there, we thought Bridget Jones was a work of fiction. Now we are not so sure. The fact is there's a singles epidemic. More and more Australians, especially young people, are living alone. Since the '70s, the number of loners aged 25-45 has increased by a staggering 250 per cent. Of course, many choose to stay single — they're quite happy being fancy free. But a heck of a lot aren't. Like Bridget, they're on the prowl, desperately seeking that special someone. And it seems that these days, in fact as well as fiction, the perfect mate is a very rare bird indeed.
