What kind of traveller are you?

If you think about the travel experiences you've enjoyed best, you'll probably find they had similar elements. The secret to having a great getaway is knowing what makes you happy. In the March issue of CLEO, we asked psychologist Meredith Fuller to create a quiz to help you work out the perfect holiday for you.

1.When and what do you normally pack for a holiday?
  a) A week or two before, I choose coordinated, interchangeable clothes for each activity, leaving space for any purchases.
  b) The night before I leave, I pack of couple of essential items in a backpack or tote. If I need anything else, I can buy or hire it there.
  c) I get out my suitcase at least a month ahead. I make a checklist and fold clothes neatly in tissue paper.
  d) I'm still throwing my clothes into a suitcase when the taxi pulls up to take me to the airport. I'll press them when I get there, if I can borrow an iron.

2.Which best describes you?
  a) I love truth, knowledge and perfection. In relationships, I am stimulating, curious and forward thinking. I take charge with a strategic approach to problem solving.
  b) I love freedom, action and impact. In relationships, I'm a thrill a minute. But, when it comes to problems, I'm a calm troubleshooter.
  c) I love belonging, reliability and order. In relationships, I'm trustworthy, dependable and I offer security. I come up with workable solutions to problems.
  d) I love spontaneity, enthusiasm and flexibility. In relationships, I'm exciting and changeable. I come up with quirky ways to tackle problems.

3.What usually prompts you to take off on a holiday?
  a) I have a hectic work schedule and need a break that will recharge me for the coming year. If I'm single, it's a chance to meet someone who shares my unusual interests.
  b) I'm restless or bored and just have to get away for some excitement. If I'm single, I want to have fun and party.
  c) I take a regular, allocated work break when it best suits my workplace — I prefer taking holidays at the same time each year. If I'm single, I like the opportunity my holiday gives me to meet lots of men.
  d) Usually, I'm in desperate need of a rest from exhaustion, stress or a relationship break-up, or I'm just craving some pleasure and pampering. If I'm single, I enjoy meeting lots of people and, if the time's right, I'd love to meet someone special.

4.Which statement is most true for you?
  a) I look at a couple of brochures and make a decision based on my interests, the content and the cost.
  b) I want to go somewhere unexplored or to a destination that offers the latest in sports or activities. If my friends and I don't know where that is, I'll ask a travel agent.
  c) I like to read of lot of brochures and make a detailed itinerary, or I return to a familiar place where I know I'll have a great holiday.
  d) I don't bother reading brochures. I tend to ask my friends for their opinions or base my decision on an article I've read. I also might decide to go somewhere at the last minute if there's a bargain flight or a good deal on accommodation.

5.What does a holiday mean to you?
  a) It's a particular time of the year that provides me with an opportunity to do many different things.
  b) My whole life feels like a holiday! I thrive on challenges and love to do exciting and adventurous things.
  c) I spend all year saving up for my holiday. I start planning my next one while I'm heading home from the last trip.
  d) It's a chance to really let go — whether I want to relax or have a whirlwind world trip.

6.Which statement do you best relate to?
  a) I like a mix of some structured time and some unorganised time.
  b) I want an adrenaline rush — whether on the dance floor or from whitewater rafting.
  c) I look for good food, a good pool, good tours, good service and value for money.
  d) I like someone else to plan the whole thing and then I'll have fun doing anything — as long as I can wake up when I feel like it and do things depending on how I feel that day.
