Do you know how to get what you need?

Are you getting what you need in your life? Why not? Could it be that you’re simply not asking for it? Assertiveness is a hard-won skill – do our quiz and find out whether or not you’ve developed it.

  a) drop hints and make snide remarks when he fails to pick them up.
  b) Leave a ‘guide to B&Bs’ in his lunchbox.
  c) Tell him you want him to take you away.
  d) Leave a message on his voicemail, a note in his diary, and in an email to his best mate.

2.You think you deserve a raise but the boss disagrees. You:
  a) compile evidence to show her why your work merits a higher salary and present it to her.
  b) Tell her it’s not fair and try to wheedle her around to your point of view.
  c) Say nothing, but find you’re ‘sick’ a lot in the following few weeks.
  d) Decide to work harder and get a raise next time.

3.You take your best friend out for a birthday lunch and get the waiter from hell, whose ineptness spoils the meal: You:
  a) let him know, in a loud voice, what poor service he’s giving.
  b) Wait until he makes three mistakes and then quietly ask to speak to the manager.
  c) Say nothing and apologise profusely to your friend.
  d) Say nothing, and leave no tip.

4.You ask a colleague for help on a project and she refuses. You:
  a) make a mental note to say no next time she hits you for a favour.
  b) keep pestering her until she says yes.
  c) decide it was probably unreasonable of you to ask.
  d) find a way to get what you need – perhaps offering to cover her work in the future, or by asking someone else.

5.You’re at the movies, sitting behind a couple who insist on talking! You:
  a) ask them politely but firmly to stop.
  b) Suffer in silence.
  c) Lean forward and say ‘shut up’.
  d) Say nothing, but kick their seats gently.
