After my boyfriend asked me to, I shaved off my pubic hair. Now I do it often because I like the way it looks. But I've heard shaving can cause vaginal infections. Is that true?

According to Sydney GP Dr Riji Ramrakha, the chances of an infection spreading to the vagina are slim. But there are drawbacks: itchy regrowth, ingrown hairs and painful razor rash. To guard against these, always use clean, sharp razor blades, and an antiseptic cream or gel to keep the area free from bacteria. For ingrown hairs, try Legole, available from pharmacists, which untraps ingrown nasties. Dr Ramrakha adds, "Getting soap in your vagina can alter its pH level and predispose you to thrush." So try using a shaving oil or gel for sensitive skin, instead.
