STORY OF THE MONTH
Want messy, sexy hair that screams “I just woke up like this”? Your wish is our command. By Rachael Mannell
How do celebs wake-up looking so goddamn sexy on screen? Well, they’re armed with an entire team of people to stroke and tease their tresses to perfection. But creating your own sexy bedroom hair doesn’t have to involve a professional. All you need is a few key styling products, a blow-dryer and a brush.
Who does it suit?
The great news is bedroom hair works best on layered hair, long fringes, hair which has outgrown its style, or that hasn’t been cut for ages. In other words, almost everyone.
Sex Kitten
Classic bedroom hair is messy in a kind of rrroaw! way. Look like you’ve just woken up with thick, lush hair. Your three-step how-to:
1. Salt-spray your hair using John Frieda Beach Blonde Ocean Waves, $17.95, at
the roots, then blow-dry upside-down to create maximum volume.
2. Take 2cm-wide sections of hair and coil around a heated tong (we like the Silver Bullet Extreme Curls Digital Ceramic Curling Irons, from $88), paying particular attention to the ends for soft, touchable curls.
3. Finish with a spritz of shine spray such as De Lorenzo Allevi8 Shine Myst, $18.95, to soften the hair.
Up for it
Bombshell hair doesn’t always mean long and lustrous. An up-do will work on short or long hair.
1. Salt-spray hair at the roots or apply a volumising product such as VO5 Whipped Mousse, $8. Blow-dry upside down to create maximum volume.
2. Take 2cm-width sections of hair and coil around the heated tong.
3. Twist the bottom section of hair into a loose chignon and randomly pin using U-pins (or Lady Jayne Fringe Pins, $3.70) to create a messy bun.
4. To finish, use a ribbon as a headband. Wind it around twice and secure at the back of the head.
Sex tips for hair
Bedroom hair is about volume, so start with a shampoo that creates it or enhances curl, such as Tigi Catwalk Curls Rock Shampoo, $23.50. Still stuck? Here’s three bed- head tips from Luke Smart creative director of Luc Espace, Sydney.
1. Don’t wash hair. Leave hair for at least one day before styling. Freshly washed hair is slippery and won’t hold the style.
2. Choose the right product. The key for soft, touchable bedhead is to use a light cream-textured product (such as Aveda Defining Whip, $49.95) or a volumising spray. Avoid sticky, heavy or greasy products, such as wax, as this will make your hair oily and decrease the life of your hairstyle. Sticky products such as mousse and hair spray will only create knots.
3. Use your fingers. For the messy and matted bedhead look (best for short hair), run a light cream-textured product through hair using your fingers. For hair with volume (best for long hair), use a volumising spray and massage into the roots, for flowing, touchable locks.
Flirty but still very grown up, big hair is the way to go.
Why? Because of the flattering way it frames the face, while maintaining height at the crown. Let flirty pieces of hair escape from the pins for added sexiness. Need this look now?
1. Spray Fudge SkyScraper hairspray, $10.95, at roots, let dry slightly and tease at the crown (don’t smooth out).
2. Take the front and side piece of hair and pull back to secure using Lady Jayne Bobby Pins, $3.25 (packet of 48), at the crown. Let your fringe or any shorter layers remain loose.
3. Give your hair a final blast of medium-hold spray to keep in place.
4 PONYTAILS TO TRY
|
 |
Messy sexy
This look is unstructured, sexy and perfect for hair with natural body. To copy, apply volumising mousse to wet hair and blow-dry with a large round brush. Loosely set with large hot rollers then, once cool, shake out with fingers. Tease the top section of hair, then pull into a soft ponytail and tie with an elastic an inch from your head. Let short pieces fall around your face for a so-sexy finishing touch.

The J.Lo pony
This look is super versatile. Wear it to work to disguise second-day hair, or team it with a glam frock for an after-work party. To start, apply some de-frizz serum to wet hair and blow-dry straight with a paddle brush. Part hair on side, then, using a brush, pull into a neat, low pony at the nape of your neck and secure with a hair elastic. Rub some de-frizz serum onto your palms and smooth over the hair to give a stylish sleek look.

Rock star quiff
A quiff is the quickest way to add rock chick cred to an otherwise boring ponytail. Plus, it’s great if you’re growing out a fringe or like your hair with height. First, blow-dry hair straight. Take the top section and blow-dry against the direction you eventually want it to sit. Tease at the roots from forehead to crown then, with a brush, mould into shape and fix with hairspray. Pull gently back with your hand, until your quiff joins the ponytail. Tie tightly with an elastic to secure.

Get knotted
This style looks tricky but guess what? It’s super easy. After you’ve blow-dried hair straight, give it a light spritz of shine spray. Pull hair into a ponytail, a little higher than the nape of your neck. Divide the tail into two sections and literally tie the two tails into a knot. Secure with three or four bobby pins.
