QUESTION OF THE WEEK
 | I’m saving to go overseas so I’m on a strict budget. Where would you suggest I could go to get some really good cheap clothes that don’t look crappy and still look fashionable?
| | It’s the classic dilemma. We all want to look like Carey Bradshaw but tell me please, who has the budget to be spending $500 on a pair of Jimmy Choo heels?
I am a big fan of bargain buys and I can tell you, they are really not that hard to find. People often make the mistake of assuming that cheaper stores have only out-dated or really poor quality clothes, but so many of the girls in our office get around in $30 frocks, and (sshh!), and they look no different to the one’s you see in some of the more expensive chain stores.
It’s not so much a question of where to go, although clothing brands like Tightrope and Sunny girl spring to mind – as what to look for.
There are certain types of fabric that scream “cheapie shop”. They’re the polyester-mix fabrics and they usually ball within one wear, or things like stretchy lycra or 100% polyester numbers that shout “cheap n nasty”. Look at what’s in the more expensive shops so you have a feel for what’s “in”, and then scope out the items which have copied the look. For instance, at the moment, you can find the most amazing cotton Indian boho skirts on the cheap, tweed jackets, cute little shrugs and great belts. I just bought a tweed blazer for $40 from a cheapie shop. Plus, go the op shops. Put a whole day aside, take your time to look carefully through the racks and you’ll be amazed at the bargains you can find.
