HOT TIPS
Before you buy...
With the implementation of GST generally bringing car prices down, there's no better time to buy. But when it comes to making a decision, you may want to ponder the following points:
Work out how much you can afford to spend, including ongoing costs like petrol, repairs, maintenance and registration.
Insurance is one of those mandatories that can get quite expensive depending on the make and model of the car, where you live, your age and driving record. So take these things into consideration and shop around to find the best deal for you.
What features are "must haves" and what are you prepared to compromise on (air con, CD stacker, sunroof, auto/manual, 6/4 cylinder)?
What primarily, will you use your car for? Camping, long road trips, city or Four wheel driving.
When you're ready to buy...
When it comes to searching for the right car, start with the usual car dealers, used car lots, classifieds and trader magazines. Plus, check online a good place to pick up a bargain. Try CarPoint.
Make sure you have a reputable mechanic or vehicle authority like NRMA (NSW, ACT, Qld and Vic) inspect the car to ensure it's mechanically sound prior to purchase.
When buying a second-hand car, contact REVS (NSW only) or the Department of Transport in your state. They'll run a check on the car for a small fee, which could save you thousands if it has been stolen or has money owing on it.
If you buy from a dealer, ask if after-sales services are included in the deal, like air con and service check-ups.
If purchasing a used car directly from the owner, ask if it has been garaged it will generally be in much better condition if it has. Or, check the rubbers around the windows and doors for signs of deterioration.
