 | I'm wearing a red dress to my formal. Should I match it with red lipstick? |
 | Red lipstick on a glossy face that's made up with little more than strategic concealer and lush black lashes is always a gorgeous, sophisticated look for evening. But it's really about finding the right red tone for your complexion - not about matching it exactly to your dress shade. Generally, if you're dark skinned, try deep berries and burgundies; if you have an olive complexion, slick on a true or blue red; and if you're medium-hued, go for a warm red to complement your tone. With all these skins, you can go as luscious with your lipstick layering as you want. However, if you're fair-faced, tread carefully. Strong red lips may be overpowering - and may bring ruddiness out in the cheeks. So pick a sheer cherry glaze or gloss, and smear on for a cordial-tinted look. Otherwise, paint your lips in a neutral lippie, then dab some red in the centre of the lips - this may be all you need for a pretty rosebud look. If you're wearing another colourful shade of formal dress, you can work your beauty look back with bright eye make-up - but not full-on painted lids. Pick a shadow (cream or powder) slightly lighter than your dress tone - say a mint green, a sky blue, a soft purple, a petal pink - and lightly dust on (smoky lids don't have to be about dark shades, after all). Or else, go for a bright version of that colour in an eyeliner and etch your upper and lower lashes for a strong, eye-popping effect. Finish off with black mascara. And keep lips to a subtle nude lippie - it's your eyes and dress that should do the talking!
