 | I’m having trouble choosing a foundation to suit my skin, what should I do?
|
 | It takes patience to find the right base for your face, and there’s an element of trial and error. But there’s one out there for you, no matter whether your skin is pale or olive, Sahara Desert-dry or fry-an-egg-on-it oily, your heritage Anglo or Asian. Just follow our tips:
1. Decide what kind of base you’re after. If you want a light coverage, look for key words like 'sheer' or 'tinted moisturiser'; but, if you need a bit more cover-up help, go for 'medium'. If you're dry-skinned, 'moisturising' (surprise, surprise!) is an essential keyword to tick off on your shopping checklist; while, if you're oily, look for 'mattifying', 'shine-control' and even 'long-lasting', as marathon mixes tend to be best for oily and combo complexions (but too drying for dehydrated dials). What you'll see a lot of are terms like 'radiant', 'shimmering' and 'light-reflecting'. These are super-pretty formulations - but just beware, they're best suited to near-flawless skin as they can highlight bumps.
2. Check out the shade spectrums on offer from the ranges that suit your needs. Remember that most skins are yellow-toned, so avoid old-fashioned peachy or pink tones. Your aim is to match your base to your skin as closely as you can. Prescriptives offers a custom-mix base and concealer service, or they can ‘print’ your skin and match one of their existing shades to yours exactly. It's a bit pricey - but we've tested it and can honestly say it's totally worth the splurge. And, if you're darker-skinned and having trouble finding your foundation soul-mate, check out the counters of MAC, Clinique and Bobbi Brown, which are all multicultural-friendly.
3. The selection: blend a little of a possible shade on a clean cheek and go outdoors to check it in a mirror. Repeat until you’ve found your base. You might feel silly wandering around the mall with a mirror, but we are talking about the search for perfection here!
