 | I recently dyed my hair dark and my old make-up just doesn't suit me anymore. Do you have any suggestions for what I should try? |
 | A few things happen when you darken light hair. Best of all, you get gorgeous locks which reflect the light and give you a glossier look. But the downside is that, because your darker hair is contrasting more heavily against your skin, you suddenly look paler and washed out. Also, every teeny imperfection seems to be instantly magnified.
Strategy 1 flawless face: Make sure your foundation evens out your skintone adequately. If not, swap to a medium-coverage liquid mix and better still, one that also adds gleam for a no-dull look (try Prescriptives Luxe, Elizabeth Arden Flawless Face, or Revlon Skinlights Tint). If you need extra cover-up help, brush up on your concealer skills. To mask dark under-eye circles, try a yellow-hued cover-up stick (like the one from Maybelline). To airbrush out spots, use a concealer brush (Bobbi Brown makes an excellent one) and carefully paint on a stick-fast concealer (like Prescriptives Camouflage Cream). Finish with a dusting of translucent powder.
Strategy 2 fake a flush: Because you're looking naturally paler, which is further exacerbated by your foundation, you need to put some colour back into your complexion. Blush is an essential make-up step for dark-haired girls. For pale skins, blend a rosy hue into apples for a Snow White sweetness; for darker skins, try a deep berry for added warmth. A stronger lipstick will also enhance your new deep-locked look. Skip neutrals and pastels and go for lip lacquers or lipsticks in hues like wine, port, red and purple.
This should be all it takes to transform you from wishy-washy to wow. But don't forget to keep up regular hair treatments and use gloss-imbuing styling products so your hair stays healthy and glowy a dull 'do looks ho-hum even on the most perfectly made-up face.
