 | I'm too scared to wear blush my cheeks are naturally so red that I'm sure I'll end up looking like a tomato! Any tips? |
 | Snap! This is exactly my problem. It took me ages to feel confident enough to wear blush and to learn how to do it right. But as soon as I got the knack of turning my ruddy cheeks into pretty pink apples, everyone started to saying how well and healthy I looked. (Don't you just love makeup trickery!). So, here's my advice to you:
Apply your usual base. A medium-coverage liquid foundation is generally best for covering up discolouration (ones to check out: Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish, Innoxa Skin Rejuvenating). You simply blend in base where needed, but especially on the cheeks. Some redness may still show through. This is where a colour-correcting cream comes into the picture. You know those strange, green-looking sticks and tubes you see? The theory is that green cancels out red. Maybelline, Clarins and Prescriptives have such products, but my particular faves are the ones in the Physicians Formula range. You simply warm up some of the product on your fingertips (this helps it become more blend-easy) and then dab onto red patches. Go easy, though too much tint and you'll just end up looking carsick! Right, so now you have your skin-coloured canvas on which to paint your blush. My preference is for a cream or gel formulation, which give a more natural colour-from-within look. I love the gels in berry shades from Napoleon and Clinique; and the rosy cream blush sticks from Chanel and Bobbi Brown. You simply use your pinkies to work the colour into your apples (the bits of your cheeks that pop out when you smile). A good blush trick: make your colour go oomph and last longer by layering up with a powder blush. Use a large, rounded make-up brush, and swirl a pinkish powder over apples and along cheekbone. There are great rosy powder blushes everywhere, from Australis to Guerlain. So, there you have it, you're blushing! But in a pretty, not flustered way. So, even if he walks over and starts talking to you, your natural redness won't give your jumbled nerves away!
