 | What are the colours to be wearing on your face this spring and summer? |
 | If you love everything girlie and colourful, you're gonna love this season! There's a whole rainbow of hues out there to try, although admittedly some are a little more out there than others! So, if you're just starting to dip your toe actually, face into the world of colour (it's time to say bye-bye to browns and neutrals at least for now), I'd recommend you start with something subdued in colour and sheer in pigment, like a rosy or orange lip gloss. I adore the Bloom Lip Glosses in Tangerine and Tint. Origins also has a really pretty pink called Candy Girl. Or, if you want more of a colour-wash and less of the shine, Clinique's new Almost Lipsticks come in some lovely shades. Once you start getting used to having a touch of colour on your lips, you'll become brave enough to pump it up and try out a more block effect. There are some great hot pink and juicy orange lipsticks at L'Oréal, Revlon, Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent. To wear these strong shades, you can either paint on one coat and blot for a stained look, or else paint on several coats and make your lips your major make-up statement (so stick to just mascara on eyes). Tip: it's best in the evening think party pout!
If you want to play up your eyes with colour, slick your lips with a nude or clear gloss and try out a purple, green, blue, yellow or even pink shadow on your lids. Yes, really! The trick to making it work, though, is with a modern take on the look. Forget a lid-full of block colour à la '70s disco. Be a bit creative. Try using an eyeliner brush (slightly damp for best effect) to slick on a line of bright hue along the upper lashes and/or under the lower lashes. Or else, use your pinkie to smear a wash of colour softly over the lid. Bloom and Napoleon both have a great selection of bright shades.
As for cheeks, rosy blush blended into your apples is your best, complexion-enhancing bet all year round. This summer, try out a gel or cream blush formulation, which seeps into skin for a natural stained-from-within look. Try out one of the pinks in the Clinique Gel Blush or Benefit Cheekies ranges. If you want to play up your cheeks more, keep your eye and lip make-up sheer and intensify your blush by layering a powder formulation in pink over the top simply use a large, rounded powder brush to whirl blush over your apples (locate them by smiling they're the cute parts of your cheeks that stick out). Nearly every brand has a pretty, girlie pink from Bobbi Brown to Australis to Lancôme. Orange-toned blush is also big this spring and summer and works particularly well with a fake tan. Bobbi Brown and, again, Benefit, have some wearable, fruity shades. You just need a touch, though, for a healthy glow not that carrot-juice-OD look!
