 | I’m doing a friend’s make-up for her wedding day, and would like some advice on whether it needs to be stronger or darker for photography purposes. |
 | Wow, you’re brave! My first advice would be to practise, practise, practise. Make sure your friend knows exactly how she will look on the day – take pictures so you can check the results and make sure she’s happy – to help to avoid any tears on the morning of the wedding.
In her book Bobbi Brown Beauty, top make-up artist Bobbi Brown suggests that wedding day make-up should be done “as if you are a going to a black-tie event.” The look should be strong and pretty.
For your friend’s make-up to look beautiful in photographs, Brown suggests you avoid:
*dark liner, which can look harsh *foundation and/or powder that is too pale *eye shadows that are brightly coloured or shimmery *extremely glossy lips *high-contrast colours (ie, bright red lipstick, bright blue eyeshadow)
She also recommends the use of yellow-toned foundations and face powders if there will be a lot of flash photography. The reason? “Electric flashes have the effect of intensifying the pink of foundations and face powder in pictures,” she says. “Women wrongly assume translucent powder is invisible – it’s not. It can drain the colour from the face and look masklike in flash prints.”
If it will be mostly natural lighting, Brown recommends minimal make-up. “Everything – too much make-up and any imperfections – shows up on the film,” she says.
When it comes to the actual make-up, her book contains the following tips:
*Use slightly more blush than you usually do. *Apply waterproof mascara. *Use white shadow as highlighter on your brow bone if you have light skin; a warm, light peach or vanilla highlighter if you have dark skin. *Avoid strong eyeshadow colour such as charcoal or your eyes may appear recessed. *Avoid frosted make-up – it creases easily and is too reflective for photographs.
Good luck!
